If you’re staying in Zadar and craving a quick island escape, check out island Ugljan, the green oasis just across the Zadar channel. Known as “Zadar’s garden,” this charming island is the perfect destination for a relaxing, scenic, and easygoing day trip.
Getting There
One of the best parts? It’s super easy to reach and the ride takes only 20 minutes! If you are on foot, there are boats riding from Zadar old town for only 5Eur/person and here is the boat sailing schedule 2025.
For cars or any other two wheelers, there are ferries from Gaženica Port in Zadar, just check the ferry sailing schedule 2025.
What to Do on Ugljan
1. Explore Preko and Kali
The boat or the ferry both take you to the port of village Preko, so strolling along the waterfront promenade, grabing a coffee at a seaside café, and taking in the laid-back island vibe would be the easiest start of your day. Villages Preko and Kali are both connected and Kali has strong fishing tradition.
2. Hike to Fortress of St. Michael
For the best views on the island, hike up to St. Michael’s Fortress. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding islands, Zadar, and even as far as Italy on a clear day.
3. Swim & Relax at the Beach
Ugljan is dotted with beautiful beaches and hidden coves. Popular and easy spot is Jaz Beach in Preko or just dipping in any place that offers a close swim across to Školjić island with a hidden monestary. Then you can dip anywhere in Kali. Inside the village there is a nice little beach that is protected from maestral wind and is always calm. Other popular beaches would include more effort to get there like Sabuša beach (Kukljica), Jelenica (Kukljica), Muline bay…
4. Discover Traditional Villages
From Preko take a bus or drive to traditional Dalmatian villages like Kukljica. You’ll find stone houses, olive groves, and a slower pace of life that’s a breath of fresh air, explore their beaches, restaurants or ice cream shops.
5. Enjoy Local Cuisine
Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a fresh seafood lunch or a simple plate of pasta with local olive oil. Many konobas (taverns) offer authentic island dishes that reflect Ugljan’s strong fishing and agricultural roots.
Why Ugljan?
It’s close, quiet, and full of charm — making it an ideal escape from the busier streets of Zadar.
